2010 Awards

Bryn Du Commission

In 2008, the Bryn Du Commission approved an ambitious plan to restore the mansion's gardens to their original beauty.  The Commission estimates that the cost of completing this project will exceed $220,000.  While the Granville Foundation lacks the resources to provide full funding for this project, it has committed itself to supporting the project over a period of several years and has awarded the Commission an initial grant of $3,000 for 2010.

Granville Federation for Appreciation of the Blues

The Granville Foundation voted to provide the Granville Federaation of the Appreciation of Blues (GFAB) a $5,000 grant to assist staging the 10th Annual Hotlicks Bluesfest on September 18, 2010.  Held on Granville's Broadway, the 10-hour musical extravaganza presents several performances from noon until 10 PM and draws thousands of festival-goers who patronize local restaurants and stores.  Revenue from the show helps to support the New Beginnings Domestic Violence Shelter and the Granville Music Boosters.

Granville Fellowship

The Granville Fellowship has been an annual recipient of foundation grants since the organization’s inception. Again in 2010, the foundation awarded the Fellowship a $6,000 grant used fund seven issues of its monthly newsletter, Fellowship luncheons, and four trips for local senior citizens.

Granville Girl Scout Troop 113

Comprised of fifteen teenage girls, Granville Girl Scout Troop 113 focuses heavily on community service activities.  In support of their good work, the Granville Foundation awarded the group $800 to assist their efforts to restore a portion of the Bryn Du mansion's landscaping between the fieldhouse and pool.  

Granville High School

For several years, the Granville High School has sponsored an "alternative spring break trip" designed to enlighten students about the needs of society's less fortunate.  During 2010, the foundation elected to continue its support of this activity providing $5,625 to assist travel to Lake Charles, Louisiana.  The total cost of this project was approximately $20,000 with much of the required funding provided by participating students.

Granville Historical Society

The foundation provided a $2,000 grant to the Granville Historical Society to support publication of a series of booklets about the community's history.  The Granville Historical Society has been a regular recipient of Granville Foundation grant funds for a number of consecutive years and in 2009 received a $5,000 grant award for publication of Jacob Little’s History of Granville.

Granville Meals-on-Wheels

The foundation provided a terminal $1,000 grant to the local Meals-on-Wheels program, ending many years support for this mainstay social service operation.  While the Granville Foundation board acknowledges the valuable service provided by the Meals-on-Wheels program, it determined that there is now ample funding available for the program through revenues raised by Licking County's "senior levy."

Granville Recreation District

The Granville Foundation awarded the Granville Recreation District (GRD) a $3,000 grant to facilitate its start up activites.  Newly created by local voters in 2008, the GRD is using the Granville Foundation's stipend to purchase of three laptop computers and one printer/copier.

Granville Studio of Visual Arts

The foundation provided its first grant to the Granville Studio of Visual Arts (GSVA) in 2009.  Recognizing the success and acceptance of its programs, the foundation awarded GSVA a follow-on grant of $4,562 to support a new ceramic arts initiative in the in its after-school arts education programs.

Kendal at Granville

Following up on its 2009 grant to assist Kendal at Granville in planning a pathway to the Village, the foundation voted to award the organization an additional $5,000 to perform additional engineering studies and to acquire right-of-way.  The foundation, however, voted to hold these funds in reserve contingent on the availability of substantially greater funding from the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT).  ODOT eventually against supporting the Kendal pathway proposal.

Newark-Granville Symphony Orchestra

The Newark-Granville Symphony was awarded a $2,000 grant to help underwrite the cost of its final concert for the 2009-2010 season that was held at Denison University's Swasey Chapel on April 25th. 

Rendville Artists

The foundation awarded a $366 grant to the Bryn Du Commission to support operation for the third annual art show and sale by developmentally disabled artists of the Rendville Art Project.  This show repeatedly has attracted widespread community interest and support.

Robbins Hunter Museum

The foundation long has supported the Robbins Hunter Museum at the Avery-Downer House, one of Granville's cultural gems.  During 2010, the foundation awarded the organization a $5,000 grant to be applied to the cost of restoring the kitchen and bathrooms.

Vintage Voices of Granville

Following on its support for many years previous, the foundation awarded the Vintage Voices of Granville $1,500 to subsidize the cost of its programs during 2010.  Led by long-time Granville vocal leader Theodosia “Teddy” Westlake, the Vintage Voices provides vocal music to groups and organizations throughout Granville and Licking County. and provides an important musical outlet for the community's older men.
